Chapter Sixteen

When they pulled up to the front of the police building, Ivy could barely navigate the lot as there were so many news vehicles and people around. A mass of people stood at the foot of the steps to the precinct, most of them with scowls on their faces. A podium had been set up at the top of the stairs, complete with microphones from all the different local news organizations. But Ivy was sharp enough to see that a couple of the news vans were from stations outside the Oakhurst area. She recognized KMLK out of Portland, KTCM out of Eugene and KLLB out of Salem. It seemed that word was spreading about their little “problem.”

“Over there,” Jonathan said, directing Ivy away from the crowd so they could get in the building through the back. Fortunately, the mob of people seemed focused on the front of the building, and no one was covering the other exits like they had a few nights ago. Probably because it looked like someone was about to make a statement. Captain Armstrong from the look of things.

“Maybe coming back wasn’t the best idea,” Ivy said. “Armstrong has to be pissed.”

“Let him,” Jonathan replied. “We’re just doing our jobs here.” He paused a moment as Ivy parked in one of the furthest spots. “You did say the more bodies we have, the more data we’d have to work with.”

“I know, it’s just…” A fourth victim, already. The time between the first Jane Doe and Harry Wilson had been a little over two weeks. Then between Wilson and Krystal Nelson was another week. And now number four, only a few days later. Whoever the killer was, they were speeding up their timeline. “This is out of control,” Ivy said. “If we don’t stop him, bodies are going to start piling up by the day.”

“No one can operate unchecked for that long,” Jonathan said. “He’s going to make a mistake somewhere. And maybe he already has. Maybe this body will give us some new info.”

They headed back over to the side entrance, and Ivy caught a glimpse of Alice Blair in the front of the pack, her notepad at the ready for when Armstrong came out to make a statement. She still couldn’t understand why the woman had followed them to the bar the other night. It had been such a strange encounter. Though, there had been a lot of strange things happening since taking this desk. If she could only go back and tell her younger self what she knew now.

As soon as they got inside, Ivy spotted Nat who ushered them into her office.

“You don’t want to be around Armstrong right now,” she said, circling behind her chaos of a desk. “He’s about to address the press.”

“We saw on the way in,” Ivy said. “What’s the rundown?”

“Same as all the others,” Nat said. “Washed up on Florence Beach about an hour and a half ago. A woman out for a morning walk spotted it caught up in some of the rocks in the low tide.
